KIMS–SUNSHINE Hospitals Performs Ground-Breaking 12-Hour Hybrid Aortic Surgery, Saves Life of High-Risk Patient

Hyderabad, November 6, 2025: KIMS–SUNSHINE Hospital, Begumpet, has successfully saved the life of a 58-year-old man suffering from a rare and severe Type B aortic dissection through a breakthrough 12-hour hybrid surgical procedure.

The patient, who had hypertension and diabetes, arrived in critical condition with a partially thrombosed aortic dissection, multiple saccular and fusiform aneurysms, and complete occlusion of a major intestinal artery. He had earlier been denied surgery at another hospital due to the extreme complexity of his condition.

Led by Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, Sr. Interventional Cardiologist & HOD – Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, a multidisciplinary team of interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and anaesthetists adopted an innovative hybrid treatment strategy combining both endovascular and open surgical approaches.

In the first stage, a 32×164 Relay Pro endovascular stent graft (Terumo–Japan) was placed to stabilise the descending aorta. The second stage involved a highly complex “Elephant Trunk Surgery” to replace the ascending aorta and three major arch arteries while ensuring continuous blood flow to the brain throughout the procedure.

The marathon 12-hour operation was completed successfully without complications, demonstrating the precision, expertise, and coordination of the team.

“This case demonstrates the power of combining endovascular and traditional open-heart techniques to manage highly complex aortic emergencies,” said Dr. Sridhar Kasturi.
