Hyderabad, 15th July, 2023: Surgeons at Kamineni Hospital, a leading healthcare provider specializing in advanced neuroscience services, has successfully performed an Awake Craniotomy procedure on a 30-year-old female patient, Mrs. Vijaya a resident of Suryapet and a home maker. This procedure, made possible by the experienced neurosurgeons, state-of-the-art imaging technology, and skilled medical team, has provided a new ray of hope for Mrs. Vijaya and her family.
The patient presented with a seizure and was subsequently diagnosed with a large lesion in the left motor area of her brain. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the lesion and its relation to motor tracts, utilized a 3 Tesla MRI scanner with high-end protocols, including Tractography. Functional MRI was used to precisely localize the motor area, which was found to be in close proximity to the lesion.
After careful evaluation and thorough counselling of the patient’s family, the decision was made to proceed with an awake craniotomy and excision of the lesion. This surgical technique, although high risk, offers the advantage of real-time assessment of motor functions during the procedure. The patient's attender was apprised of the potential risks associated with the surgery, including seizures and the need for immediate ventilatory support, as well as the possibility of transient limb weakness.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ramesh, Senior Neurosurgeon, Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar Said, “During the procedure, the patient experienced seizures; however, with support of our skilled medical and anaesthetist team was able to promptly control them using seizure medications and ice cold saline. Additionally, the utilization of intraoperative high-resolution ultrasound allowed us for the identification of abnormal brain parenchyma, enabling successful excision of the lesion. The patient experienced transient weakness following the surgery, which progressively improved over time.
The availability of advanced neuroscience center, equipped with cutting-edge technology, played a crucial role in achieving these positive outcomes for Mrs. Vijaya. "At Kamineni Hospitals, we are committed to providing exceptional care and employing the latest advancements in the field of neuroscience. This case exemplifies the dedication of our team in delivering the best possible outcomes for our patients" Dr. Ramesh added.
Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Vijaya said, "I am deeply thankful to the doctors and nursing staff at Kamineni Hospitals for their exceptional care and service. They have given me a new lease on life, and I am grateful for their expertise and dedication."
