Rare Surgery for Vaginal Atresia Successfully Performed on 45-Day-Old Baby at Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals

Hyderabad, May 16, 2024: Doctors at Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals successfully performed a rare surgery vaginal atresia on 45-day-old infant. This complex condition, which involves the absence of a vaginal opening, was expertly managed by Dr. Madhu Mohan Reddy, Senior Pediatric Surgeon at the hospital.

The infant was brought to Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals with symptoms of abdominal swelling and vomiting persisting for four days. Upon examination, it was discovered that the baby had only one opening between her legs instead of a vaginal opening, along with an abnormal position of the anus. Further tests revealed issues with the urinary system, including problems with the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder, leading to kidney swelling and urinary tract issues. Additional imaging shows accumulation of fluid in Vagina (hydrocolpus) alongside with  spinal deformation.

To address these complex issues, the medical team at Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals devised a comprehensive treatment plan. The infant underwent a thorough examination of the bladder using a small camera (cystoscopy), followed by a surgical procedure called laparotomy under anesthesia. During this surgery, Vaginal reconstruction was done and accumulation of fluid in Vagina was drained. The surgery, which lasted for 5 hours, hours, was completed successfully without any complications.

Dr. Madhu Mohan Reddy explained that for a few months after the birth, the baby's fluids is passed through the vagina, but due to the lack of a vaginal opening, the fluids remains in the vagina , causing the abdomen to swell and resulting in pain and infection in the bladder and kidneys, as well as other parts. This can lead to kidney dysfunction, urinary tract infections, and other problems. It was identified that the baby did not have a vaginal opening, and the parents were informed about the problem and accepted treatment. The successful Primary vaginal reconstruction of the vagina within 2.5 cm was performed with the assistance of Gynecologist Dr. Varalakshmi.

The parents of the infant were grateful for the advanced facilities, skilled medical team, and committed nursing staff at Medicover Woman & Child Hospitals. They thanked Dr. Madhu Mohan Reddy & Team for the successful surgery outcome & saving the life of their baby.
