Rare Surgery at Vasavi Hospital 8-kg Tumor Removed from Woman’s Abdomen

Hyderabad, November 26, 2025 :Vasavi Hospital successfully performed a rare surgery in which an 8-kilogram abdominal tumor was removed from a woman. Renowned Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr. Azarath led the complex procedure and completed the removal of the mass using the Sleeve Gastrectomy technique in a three-hour operation.

Speaking at a press meet held on Wednesday, Dr. Azarath shared details of the rare case. A 58-year-old woman from the city arrived at Vasavi Hospital two days ago with severe abdominal pain and an inability to eat. Under the supervision of Dr. Azarath, the medical team conducted examinations including an MRI scan, which revealed a large tumor inside her abdomen.

Typically, such tumors form beneath the four muscular layers of the stomach wall and measure around 2 cm to 8–10 cm. However, in this case, the mass measured an extraordinary 30 × 28 × 25 cm, extending across both sides of the abdomen. Because of the tumor’s size, the patient appeared as though she was eight months pregnant and suffered from breathlessness and severe discomfort.

On Tuesday, surgeons successfully removed the tumor through Sleeve Gastrectomy. Dr. Azarath noted that if such tumors are not removed in time, they may rupture inside the abdomen. If they adhere to the small intestine, they can pose life-threatening complications. A small portion of the tumor has been sent for biopsy, which will determine whether it is benign or malignant, and further treatment will be provided based on the report.

Dr. Azarath emphasized that the removal of an 8-kg tumor is exceptionally rare.
