Hyderabad 29th March 2019: Aiming to provide advanced treatment for a complete range of pulmonary diseases an ‘Institute of Advanced Lung Disease’ was launched in Hyderabad. The Institute would provide highly specialized evaluation and treatment through a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach for complex and end stage lung diseases.
Dr Ravipati Srinivas Kumar, Head of the Institute of Advanced Lung Disease, mentioned “Chronic respiratory diseases are the third leading cause of death both worldwide and in India. Respiratory diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), PAH, pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB) are emerging as major health problems and recent trends show that instances of chronic respiratory diseases are also on the rise in the cities of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, especially in Hyderabad and neighboring districts.”
According to a Global Study conducted last year, about 55 million people in India are suffering from Chronic Pulmonary Disease and the number of cases has increased from 28 million to 55 million from 1990 to 2016. Chronic Pulmonary Disease is also responsible for 10.9 per cent of deaths.
Doctors stated that detection, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of Chronic Pulmonary Diseases is highly important and mentioned the alarming fact, that 25-30 per cent of people with clinically significant lung disease are ignorant of the disease and there is a rampant misdiagnosis too. “Lack of awareness especially in India is leading to underestimating the disease prevalence which is resulting in high disease progression and poor management. Gleneagles Global Hospitals are now giving a hope of advanced treatments like Lung Transplant and Stem Cell Therapy.” said Dr Tapaswi Krishna P, Consultant Pulmonologist at the Institute of Advanced Lung Disease.
As the case progresses and becomes difficult to manage, other treatment options come into play. “Lung transplant is the only option for end stage lung diseases like interstitial lung disease (ILD), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pulmonary hypertension. A lung transplant can dramatically improve quality of life and increase chances of survival,” says Dr Vijil Rahulan, Senior Transplant Pulmonologist.
The Institute of Advanced Lung Disease would be headed by Dr Ravipati Srinivasa Kumar, Senior Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist and will have a specialized team of doctors who have assisted and performed more than 100 Lung Transplants and who possess a vast experience in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases.
