Hyderabad, July 26, 2025 — Ahead of World Hepatitis Day, observed globally on July 28, Dr. Kavya Dendukudi, Lead Transplant Hepatologist and Liver Specialist at Gleneagles Hospital, Lakdi-Ka-Pul, Hyderabad, has issued a strong call for early screening and awareness about viral hepatitis—one of the most silent yet deadly liver diseases affecting millions worldwide.
“Hepatitis is silent—until it isn’t. More than 300 million people across the globe live with viral hepatitis, many unaware until it leads to cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer,” said Dr. Kavya. “In India, Hepatitis B and C are among the top causes of chronic liver disease and liver transplantation.”
This year’s global theme, “Hepatitis Can’t Wait,” underscores the critical need for immediate action. Dr. Kavya warned that delays in screening, vaccination, or treatment can result in irreversible liver damage or even death.
She advised screening for individuals with unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, or elevated liver enzymes, as well as those with diabetes, obesity, a history of IV drug use or unprotected sex, or recipients of blood transfusions before 2001. Close contacts of hepatitis-positive individuals are also at risk.
“A simple blood test can detect the virus. Hepatitis B is preventable with a vaccine, and Hepatitis C is curable with short-term oral treatment. The liver does more than detox—it regulates immunity, metabolism, hormones, and even emotions. It deserves care through timely screening and healthy living,” she emphasized.
